CAPTAINS DAY IS A SWINGING SUCCESS

The sun was shining as Steve Davis held his Captains Day at Royal Belfast Golf Club on Friday 11 September. The competition which marks the end of the 2009 golfing season, was to be hotly contested as competitors vied for both the Captains Prize and the chance to get their hands on the coveted Ferguson Trophy, which would be awarded to the player with the best combined score from the Royal Belfast and Malone outing.

32 Old Boys and guests teed off but it was Old Boys newcomer Stephen Minford, staying strong with an impressive 38 points (playing the second nine in 2 under par gross), who won the Captains Prize. He fought off stiff competition from Les Allen who came in a close second place with 37 points and Adrian Brown who came in third place with 35 points.

The guest prize was won by Dr Michael Park with 37 points.

Having won the Picken Cup earlier in the season Michael Bennett, who had a four point led over his rivals going into the competition, was a serious contender for the Ferguson Trophy. His four point lead proved to be too much and he was awarded the winner of the 2009 Ferguson Trophy with a very impressive 68 points.

The BRA Old Boys’ Association would like to thank the Captain and members of the Royal Belfast Golf Club for once again hosting the September outing, the greens staff for keeping the course in such a fantastic condition and the catering staff for a delicious meal. A final word of thanks goes to the Old Boy’s Committee for organising another successful event.
